• Three or more years of civil litigation experience; admitted in Texas
• 2,000 billable hours per year
• In the office for your first 90 days. After that, we offer hybrid schedule options
• Quarterly bonuses up to $10,000, based on billable hours

The Job

This is a trial practice. We defend large and small companies to include product manufacturers and corporate clients in personal injury, catastrophic loss, product liability, and commercial matters including labor and employment claims. Our associates take and defend critical depositions, argue motions, collaborate directly with experts, and sit second and first chair at trial. If you have spent three years reviewing documents and waiting for a case that never goes to trial, this job presents an opportunity that will allow you to grow meaningfully as an advocate.

You will manage your own caseload from inception through trial or resolution, work with retained and opposing experts, serve as a primary point of contact for clients and ensure compliance with client outside counsel guidelines.

What We Look For

• Personal injury, product liability, or catastrophic loss defense experience is a must
• Demonstrated ability to take and defend depositions
• A genuine appetite for oral advocacy
• Ability to work on cases with large damage exposures
• Strong writing. We require all candidates to provide at least one writing sample
• Demonstrated ability to write initial reports, case evaluations and status updates to clients
• The judgment to know which questions belong to a partner and which are yours to resolve
• Contemporaneous daily time entry and adherence to firm and client billing guidelines
• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and admission to the State Bar of Texas in good standing
• Admission to the Federal districts (Southern, Northern, Western and Eastern) are a plus

Compensation and Benefits

Salary depends on experience. Quarterly bonuses beginning at a 170-hour monthly average, plus a discretionary year-end bonus for client development, mentoring, bar involvement, and originations. Medical, dental, vision, life and AD&D, and short- and long-term disability coverage. Health savings account with monthly employer contribution on the high-deductible plan. 401(k) with employer match. Paralegal - Personal Injury Defense Litigation

Dallas, TX  •  Houston, TX

The Essentials
• 3or more years of litigation paralegal experience; personal injury or catastrophic loss defense preferred
• 1,680 billable hours per year, roughly 140 per month
• Your first 90 days will be in the office. We offer a hybrid schedule following your probationary period where employees enjoy 2 remote days a week

The Job

Discovery-heavy, document-intensive work on personal injury and catastrophic loss defense matters where the records are voluminous and the deadlines are real. You will obtain and analyze medical, financial, tax, and employment records, prepare medical chronologies, compile evidence from discovery documents and transcripts, calendar and track case deadlines, build trial notebooks and exhibits, and research expert qualifications and prior testimony.
We are looking for someone who reads a production and notices what is missing from it.
Our billable target is set deliberately below what some firms ask, because the file management and coordination work above is essential to the practice and is not separately billed. We would rather you have room to do it well.

What We Look For

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited university and/or a paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program
• Above-average demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
• Strong analytical skills and advanced written and verbal communication
• The instinct to flag a gap in a production or an expert file without being asked, and to propose how to close it
• Sound judgment and the ability to work independently in a high-volume, team environment
• Daily contemporaneous time entry and adherence to firm and client billing guidelines

Compensation and Benefits

Salary DOE. Medical, dental, vision, life and AD&D, and short- and long-term disability coverage. Health savings account with monthly employer contribution on the high-deductible plan. 401(k) with employer match. Hybrid schedule after your first 90 days. Generous paid time off.

Summer Associates Program

GET YOUR CAREER OFF TO THE BEST POSSIBLE START

Our Summer Associate Program is not like your typical internship. We’re very particular about who we accept. After all, in the last decade, we’ve hired more than 20 of our Summer Associates to join the firm as full-time associates after graduation.

As a Summer Associate, you’ll be paired with a partner and associate mentor who will give you an insider’s view of the types of cases we represent, provide an environment where your questions and contributions are welcome, and empower you to take on meaningful projects when appropriate. We don’t expect you to know everything on day one. But we do expect you to have the drive to work hard, learn quickly, and make the most of the opportunities that are put before you.

How To Apply

We select our summer associates with the intent of hiring them after graduation. Due to the high volume of interest in our program, we select our summer associate candidates through our On Campus Interview (OCI) programs. If your law school does not have an OCI program and you are interested in our summer associate program, please email summers@hartlinebarger.com to learn more.

As always, we look forward to seeing the caliber of this year’s candidates and wish you the best of luck.
